How do COVID-19 vaccines work (and what to expect)?

Sometimes we fear new things or changes because we don't know what to expect. This is especially true for COVID-19 as well as the vaccine. I created this short and simple infographic (below) on how the vaccine effects the body and some symptoms you should expect.

While it's rare, sometimes symptoms can last a little longer, or you might just want some reassurance. The tips below don't normally mean something is a cause for alarm, but it's always a good idea to keep your doctor informed so they can help you feel your best. It's good to remember when to call the doctor:

  1. If, after 24 hours, the redness and tenderness of the injection site are getting worse, you should call your doctor.

  2. If you are worried the other side effects are not going away or getting worse after 3 days, you should call your doctor.

Side note: It's okay to get a second, third, or even fourth opinion. You deserve to feel safe and understood, especially by a medical professional. You shouldn't feel guilty or "stupid" for expressing your concerns or asking questions.

Getting vaccinated (or not) should be an educated choice and you should be secure in your decision. Some DOs and DONTs may help the process of deciding:

• DO weigh the benefits (pros) against the disadvantages (cons).

• DON'T let false or outdated information be a factor in your decision.

• DO ask qualified, trusted professionals questions.

• DON'T use just one source of information or make assumptions.

• DO be safe and stay curious!

Hopefully this eases your mind a little and helps give you a starting point for answering your questions and easing your concerns.
